About
Have you ever observed the moving mouth parts of a praying mantis close up? As a youngster, I was always fascinated with the world around me, both built and natural, both man-made machines and insects and other creatures. This early passion led to my interest in applying science and mathematics to solve problems, which then led to formal studies in mechatronics, ecology and geoscience and my ongoing interest in biomimetics. I like to find creative solutions that integrate disparate ideas using science, math, logic and intuition to solve real world problems, where I can then see an actual solution in effect.
One of my proudest achievements to date that helped form the person I am today is earning the right to call myself a "Bay Tripper." Together with a group of other paddlers, I canoed 550 kilometers along the Harricana River to James Bay at Hudson Bay. I paddled across James Bay and dragged my canoe behind me when the water levels were too low. I ate rehydrated cake batter for dinner and I slept on a rock in the pouring rain. I paddled against cold north squalls and into blinding hot sunshine. It's experiences like these, cut off from civilization, that give you an appreciation for who you are in the world, what is around you, and what is possible.
